Cat-Cow Pose: Gentle Movement for a Healthier Spine
The Cat-Cow Pose (known in Sanskrit as Marjaryasana-Bitilasana) is a simple yet powerful movement often practiced at the beginning of a yoga session. It involves slowly transitioning between two poses—Cat (rounded spine) and Cow (arched spine)—to warm up the spine, increase flexibility, and bring awareness to the breath and body.
This flowing motion helps:
- Loosen up the spine and release tension in the back and neck
- Gently massage the internal organs, aiding digestion
- Improve posture and coordination
- Calm the nervous system and connect movement with deep, mindful breathing
How to Perform Cat-Cow:
- Start in a tabletop position on hands and knees, with wrists under shoulders and knees under hips.
- Inhale as you drop your belly toward the floor, lift your head and tailbone up—this is Cow Pose.
- Exhale as you round your back like a Halloween cat, tucking the tailbone and chin—this is Cat Pose.
- Continue flowing between the two with your breath for 5–10 rounds.
It’s gentle enough for beginners but beneficial for everyone, from office workers with tight backs to athletes looking to improve spinal mobility.
