Over the course of 16 years, Dr. Joanna Butler has meticulously created a vast library of high-quality medical illustrations. What began as a focus on bespoke, custom medical artwork has steadily evolved and from this journey came ideas: why not turn some of our most popular medical illustrations into posters? That’s how our anatomy poster collection was born where each one is a piece of art with a purpose, made to inform and inspire, whether it's hanging in a classroom, clinic, or home.

The company is co-owned by Dr. Joanna Butler and Tim Butler, whose shared vision and dedication have transformed a portfolio of custom commissions into a scalable enterprise centred around intellectual property (IP).

The transition from providing one-off illustrations to building a catalog of licensable assets and products has been the result of sustained effort, strategic growth, and striving for creative excellence. Today, we are proud to license and sell our own IP, either as stock medical illustrations or anatomy posters which is an achievement that reflects not only the quality of the illustrations but also the long-term commitment to making medical art widely accessible and commercially viable.

Our anatomy posters have been created by Dr Joanna Butler who has been at the forefront of medical and scientific illustration since 2009.

Based in Haslemere, Surrey, UK, Joanna's art studio (www.medical-artist.com) and (www.scientific-artist.com) specialises in high-quality visual communications for the healthcare and scientific industries, of human and animal anatomy with a mission to provide engaging and educational anatomical materials. The anatomy and science posters are the result of many years of hand-crafted illustrations and are designed to be informative, intricate, detailed, unique, educational and engaging. Dr Butler has pioneered the illustration of diverse ethnic population groups and produced groundbreaking artwork on neglected tropical diseases of the skin, capturing a level of detail never before seen. Her expertise lies in seamlessly integrating art and anatomy, ensuring her illustrations serve as invaluable tools for education, research, and medical training.

About our Professional Recognition & Research

Joanna is a respected member of multiple prestigious organisations, including the Institute of Medical Illustrators, Association of Medical Illustrators, Academy of Healthcare Sciences, and the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators.

In 2024, she earned a Ph.D. from the University of Surrey, Guildford, where she conducted a cross-disciplinary, practice based study on neglected tropical diseases of the skin (skin NTDs) such as Buruli ulcer and Yaws. Recognising the lack of detailed medical imagery for these conditions, Joanna applied her medical artistry to create scientifically accurate illustrations depicting various stages of infection. This research was developed to support healthcare workers in Ghana, Africa, providing them with visual tools to aid disease recognition, diagnosis, and education.

With her extensive expertise, Joanna continues to push the boundaries of medical illustration, ensuring that her work not only informs and educates but also contributes to global healthcare advancements.
